mathematics

focuses on how children understand numbers, shapes, and patterns. It includes counting, measuring, recognizing spatial relationships, and solving problems. Children use these skills to explore and make sense of their world.

31. Number words and symbols: Children recognize and use
number words and symbols.
32. Counting: Children count things.
33. Part-whole relationships: Children combine and separate
quantities of objects.
34. Shapes: Children identify, name, and describe shapes.
35. Spatial awareness: Children recognize spatial relationships
among people and objects.
36. Measuring: Children measure to describe, compare, and
order things.
37. Unit: Children understand and use the concept of unit.
38. Patterns: Children identify, describe, copy, complete, and
create patterns.
39. Data analysis: Children use information about quantity to
draw conclusions, make decisions, and solve problems.

activities

13. Activity name- counting bears

Originating Idea- children can learn numbers and counting through hands on play

Curriculum Area- mathematics, KDI 32 Counting: Children count things.

Materials- counting bears (any small object), cups, number sheet

Appropriate Age group- PreK

Beginning of Activity- today we are going to be counting and grouping bears!

Middle of Activity- children can pick a number sheet (sheet with a circle and number 3, 6, and 9) etc., and count the bears to fill each group

Your ideas for scaffolding children at different developmental levels

Early: counting a small amount of bears, counting with help

Middle: counting up to 10, matching numbers to the groups

Later: counting higher, creating more groups, adding together

End of Activity- talking about our groups, and how many bears we counted

Follow-up Ideas-

  • counting songs
  • Practicing addition

assessment- children are able to count

14. Activity name- shape hunt

Originating Idea- children like to explore and learn about shapes

Curriculum Area- mathematics, KDI 34 Shapes: Children identify, name, and describe shapes

Materials- shape cards, classroom materials

Appropriate Age group- PreK

Beginning of Activity- today we are going to go on a shape hunt

Middle of Activity- showing a shape card to children, asking what shape it is, having children go off and find something of that shape in the classroom

Your ideas for scaffolding children at different developmental levels

Early: giving child the paper with shape on it

Middle: naming the shapes, saying how many sides the shape has

Later: finding more than one object, comparing shapes

End of Activity- looking over and comparing different shapes that we found

Follow-up Ideas-

  • Outdoor shape hunt
  • Building shapes with blocks

assessment- children can recognize shapes

15. Activity name- movement pattern dance

Originating Idea- children learn patterns, and what they are through moving

Curriculum Area- mathematics, KDI 38 Patterns: Children identify, describe, copy, complete, and create patterns.

Materials- light music, large open area

Appropriate Age group- PreK

Beginning of Activity- today we are going to make patterns while moving our bodies!

Middle of Activity- watch my pattern first (jump, clap, jump, clap) can you do that pattern, giving children turns to share a pattern for children to recreate

Your ideas for scaffolding children at different developmental levels

Early: simple patterns (x,y,x, y)

Middle: repeating other patterns, saying what comes next in the pattern

Later: more complicated patterns (x, y, z, z, x, y, z, z)

End of Activity- going over what a pattern is

Follow-up Ideas-

  • Using instrument sounds to make patterns
  • Making patterns with outdoor objects

assessment- children can make patterns
